Awards:
Honor Award, Louisiana Architects Association, 1972.
Project Profile:
The 7300 square feet
site for this project is located on Old River Road a few miles
down river from Algiers Point with a marvelous view of the Mississippi
River and shipping through the port. The buildable area is limited
due to the corner location and the irregular shape. The owner
wanted to take advantage of the view of the river as much as
possible. The solution was to build the residence on concrete
columns so the first floor was at the height of the levee, 13
feet.
The four-bedroom residence is
designed for a family with 3 teenage boys required a spacious
environment incorporating an open plan with privacy in the sleeping
areas. A combined workshop, recreation, and music room with additional
storage is separate from the living areas underneath the house.
Wood frame construction is supported
on locally furnished laminated wood beams. Poured in place reinforced
concrete columns support the floor beam system. The exterior
skin is cedar shingles.
