Project Profile:
Coliseum Square is located in the Lower Garden District and in
the 19th century was the focal point of this gentle residential
neighborhood with streets named for the Greek Muses. The
planning approach included historic research to clearly understand
the forces shaping the unusal geometry and character of the place.
This research revealed the earliest attempts to solve
drainage problems in an expanding urban environment. Contempoary
social issues and needs, along with the history of the place
provided the program for restoration and improvement.
The design solution creates an
urban park reflecting the past while responding to our time.
The new Lafon fountain and basin shape commemorates an early
response to New Orleans' ever present issue of drainage.
