Project Profile:
Located in an 86 acre wilderness park in Eastern New Orleans, the Louisiana Nature and Science Center is an education and research facility dedicated to demonstrating the inter-dependency of man and nature in Louisiana's unique coastal environment.

Our firm has assisted the Nature Center since 1972. Consistent with the energy efficient philosophy of the Center, the complex is "designed with nature". The buildings are raised off the ground and have a minimal impact on the natural environment. The first phase exhibition building includes space for natural science exhibits, an amphitheater, a gift shop and the "Discovery Loft", a unique hands-on educational experience. E. Eean McNaughton Architects designed the first exhibits for the building: the Blue Crab and Mosquito exhibits.

The second phase is comprised of an educational component and an administrative component. The educational component includes a planetarium, research library and resource center, classrooms, a teaching greenhouse and an outdoor amphitheater. The administrative component constitutes offices, exhibit workshop and storage facilities. The complex of buildings overlooks a lagoon and wetland providing a natural habitat for aquatic plants and animals. An extensive system of nature trails extends from the exhibit buildings into the natural forest, where the environment can be experienced, studied and enjoyed.
